Price Hike

Mobile network Vodafone have recently sent letters and text messages to all of their customers informing them of some price changes to all contracts, the changes will take place on the 1st September 2008 and the move has angered many customers!

The cost to call 05, 080, 084 numbers will be increasing from 15 pence per minute to 20 pence per minute. Calls to 0871 numbers will be increasing from 25 pence per minute to 35 pence per minute. This is a whopping increase of 33% and 40% respectively!

Vodafone had released a statement saying that they do not believe that the changes will have a significant impact on their customers, and explain that this is the first year that they have revised prices in over two years. However those that do call these numbers will definitely see an increase – even just a few calls a month to your bank or another big organisation will see a rise in the cost of your mobile phone bill.

This move by Vodafone will only increase the bid to have 08 numbers treated the same as geographic numbers – Ofcom set out proposals in June this year saying that all 08 numbers should be treated the same as ‘normal’ landline calls. This means that they would like to see the 08 numbers back to being included in the monthly allowance of minutes that come with mobile phone contracts, or they are to be given the same pricing as ‘normal’ landline numbers. Ofcom has not enforced this, and it is not known if they will, but price rises like this can only heighten the need for such a move.

Mobile phone customers who are looking to avoid paying higher numbers to call 08 lines can use websites such as ‘say no to 0870’ which lists alternative geographic numbers for organisations.
