Those Who Can Do and Those Who Can’t, Bully


It is often said that there are two situations and conditions that unite a workforce in the workplace. The first of these is where the entire workforce has a complete and utter loyalty to their management and owners and conversely the second situation occurs when there is a complete reversal of this and the workforce is united in their hatred and loathing for the boss! Sadly this last situation occurs more frequently than the former but the second situation also highlights a growing problem not only in the workplace but also in society and that is of bullying. It is alleged that half the workforce are actually bullied in one shape or another on a regular basis and most are actually not aware of the fact. The bottom line comes when you consider the following scenario. How many times have you felt that you were unnecessarily criticized, ignored, intimidated, undermined, never recognized in the workplace? This could be bullying? The whole situation of bullying in the workplace raise all sorts of questions and really these go quite deep into how we manage our affairs in society today. That having been said it might be of assistance if we were to consider the definition of bullying. Bullying has been described as “a repeated pattern of negative intrusive violational behaviour against one or more targets and comprises constant trivial knit picking criticism, refusal to value and acknowledge, undermining discrediting and a host of other behaviours” Alongside bullying is another word used to describe a similar situation and that is the word mobbing. Now mobbing is term that is found in more common use on mainland Europe and also Scotland where in fact it is a criminal offence. It relates to a situation where the target is selected and then bullied (mobbed) by a group of people rather than one individual. In a situation where mobbing occurs, the organiser, chief bully or ringleader incites his or her supporters, cronies and colleagues to target and engage in adversarial action with their selected target. The important thing to realize here is that if you are the subject of mobbing or bullying at work then you are not alone and there are certain things that you can do about it if you are careful. Firstly you have to regain control. You have to recognize what is happening to you as bullying and that it is the bully who has the problem not you and they are trying to take their problems and project them on to you. Secondly you have to plan for action. At this stage it is important that you try and find out everything you can about bullying. It is important at this stage, in fact it's actually essential that you do your homework before you take action. Thirdly it is essential that you do take action and the most useful way that this can be accomplished is if you keep a diary or a journal of everything that happens, remember it's not each incident that counts so don't necessarily go overboard on the detail it's the number, the regularity and especially the pattern of what is going on that is important. Keep your diary or journal in a safe place preferably at home and not at work and when you feel you have sufficient information then it is essential that you confront your boss or manager. Your employees now have a legal and moral obligation to make sure all that you are not bullied in the workplace and there are in fact extremely stringent rules and regulations to ensure that your safety and well being is looked after at all times. Remember, you are not alone.
