Using the Net for Job Networking

While constructing a good resume and developing work experience are necessary tools to have while searching for a job, one of the most important aspects of job searching is networking. The concept of networking has been in place for hundreds of years and it has entered into the computer age as well, with the advent of the Internet and advanced computer technology.

Building a solid networking framework can be a valuable asset in looking for the right job. This network can consist of friends and family, old classmates, old employers or simply acquaintances you have met. Joining community programs and clubs can also extend the reach of your network. If you are a college graduate, get in touch with your college's Career Services program and find out how they can help you build your network.

Educate the people in your network about your qualifications and skills as well as the kind of work you are looking for. In this way, people will have you in mind when they come across a good employment option. Contact as many people as you can and develop a store of information and leads related to your job search. The more people in your network, the greater your chances of landing the job that you want.

With the advent of the Internet, job search networking has revolutionized tremendously. There are now a number of job search sites and forums available that are specifically designed to help you network and find the job you are looking for. Best of all, most of these websites offer their services for free. Online networking sites have a number of advantages, one of them being that you can connect with a vast number of people, even on an international level.

You can also fine-tune your network, joining online job forums or performing job searches that suit your own specific criteria. Many online networking sites and forums will give you the opportunity to communicate with employers directly. Many sites also provide job listings as well as a platform on which you can post your resume or apply for jobs. Online networking forums and job sites will also have chat rooms or message boards, where you can ask questions, get advice or network with people online.

While networking online, it is a good idea to keep track of where you apply, whom you are mailing and where you have sent queries. Since applying for jobs or sending emails is done quickly and easily over the Internet, it can be easy to lose track. Keeping track of your networking activities can save you the trouble of making mistakes later on. Keep your resume up-to-date and ready to send. Remember the strengths and attributes that you have listed so that you can articulate them when attending interviews. Using the internet to enhance your job search network can be a valuable tool, as it extends your reach and gives you access to a number of resources online.
