Styling Your Curly Hair during the Summer Months

I don’t want to sound conceited but I would never trade my high maintenance curly hair for easy-to-work with straight hair. Think about it. Curly hair gives us one big styling advantage over other girls with straight hair. It doesn’t matter if how we style our hair because we’ll always have lots of volume. It is all fun and games with curly hair. While it is enviable for both its volume and beauty, keeping it in place is not a one of curl’s stronger points. It’s second nature for your curls to stick up, out and all over the place. They will do almost anything for attention. Another one of its cons is frizz and the dreaded “poof”. At least we don’t need to suffer from washing our hair every single day or oily hair like straight hair girls do. Here are some of my secrets to living with curly hair.

  • Don’t even bother fighting your curls on humid days – When it’s hot, sticky, and muggy out, you may as well not even bother getting your flat iron out of the drawer. It won’t do any good. You’ll end up spending hours trying to straighten your hair, all for nothing once you take one step outside.
  • Get rid of that brush and use a comb – If you come away with anything from reading this, I hope this little piece of advice is it. Use a comb and ditch the brush. Actually, I even know a few women who won’t even uses combs and use their fingers instead. A combs works great too if you are using any type of products in your hair because it ensures you're coating it with the product.
  • Learn how to use a blow dryer – For those women out there who aren’t sure how to use a blow dryer, here is my advice: Put it down and step away from the dryer! A blow dryer in the hands of the inexperienced can be a nightmare for anyone with curly hair. Let your curly hair air dry as long as possible and then blow dry the rest with a diffuser. This will avoid the dreaded “poof”. Aim nozzle of the blow dryer downward, in the direction hair grows, if you don't use a diffuser.
  • You’re not stuck with frizz the rest of your life – If you have curly hair or know someone who does, then I’m sure you’re aware of the fact that humid air wrecks havoc on curly hair. This is because curly hair tends to be dry and wants to soak up moisture causing the hair cuticles to expand and frizz. Use a leave-in conditioner, a deep conditioner and a styling product involving silicone. These should be found in the bathrooms of anyone with curly hair. It is basically an easy process to prevent the frizz: deep condition once a week, use a leave-in conditioner to your ends after a shower and apply a product that contains silicone to wet hair, coating every curl.
  • You can go straight if you want - One of the great benefits of having curly hair is that you can make it go straight if you’re willing to put the work into it. There are numerous types of professional hair straightening available for you to try. The secret is finding one that fits into your budget and the texture of your hair. These straightening solutions are used much like perm treatment, except that your hair becomes straightened. Buy a good ionic flat iron since you’ll still need to iron your hair. They work much quicker than normal irons plus they won’t fry your hair.
  • Curly Hair Looks Best Longish – One of the most common complaints I hear is short hair on curly women. I’m sorry ladies. I know you would love to try something different with your locks but face the facts, short hair doesn't look good if it’s curly. You can blame it on your face shape. Short hair tends to be poofy and your curls need length to weigh them down. Women tend look best with curly hair that grows below the shoulders.
