Erectile dysfunction is a very common disorder in men over the age of 20 years. In the case of erectile dysfunction the penis is unable to get or maintain an erection. Erectile dysfunction can be due to many causes. The various causes of erectile dysfunction can be divided into physiological causes and psychological causes. The physiological causes of erectile dysfunction are diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels in the body. The psychological causes consist of anxiety, depression and tension. Diabetes is also a very common disorder in men. It is cause due to the presence of high blood sugar in the body. The symptoms of diabetes are many, the chief amongst them being high blood pressure, obesity and erectile dysfunction. Yes, diabetes is a cause of erectile dysfunction. It is estimated that about 35%-75% will experience erectile dysfunction up to a certain degree at one time or the other. Men who are suffering from diabetes tend to experience erectile dysfunction ten to fifteen years earlier than men who do not suffer from diabetes. As men become older, erectile dysfunction becomes more common. In fact after the age of 50 years, the incidence of erectile dysfunction in men increases manifold. And after the age of 70 years, the incidence of men having erectile dysfunction is likely to be 95%. The causes of erectile dysfunction in men with diabetes are varied. The causes maybe due to impairments in the blood vessels and muscle as a result of which the blood cant reach the penis. To get an erection, men need healthy blood vessels that are able to transport blood to the penis. Also a strong desire to have sex is very much necessary. Hence even if you have normal levels of male hormones and you want to have sex, then also you might not be able to achieve maximum erection. The treatment options include oral medications such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. Only these medications have been approved by the FDA till now. However these medications may trigger side effects in patients like vomiting, nausea and back pain. Hence people are now opting for herbal supplements that are made of natural extracts of herbs. These medications are very effective and also have minimal side effects. Always ask your doctor as to what would be the best treatment for you. This is because your doctor knows your body condition and hence will be able to provide the best kind of treatment to you.
