With the realisation that you suffer from diabetes, comes the need to educate yourself about the disease. The line of treatment for diabetes is such that you need to be self-dependent and take proper care of yourself. Your doctor can assist you in this process by showing you how to inject yourself with insulin and how to check your blood sugar level. Dietary regulations: The first thing that is to be changed is your dietary habit. You will strictly have to stay away from high starch/sugar foods like potatoes, rice, pasta, chocolates and also red meat and oil. If you cannot do without your daily fix of tea/coffee, then you will have to dispense with the sugar and also milk, if possible. Your diet should consist of fibre rich food like vegetables and some fruits. Since sugar level can creep up surreptitiously through what you eat, you need to be alert to this fact. It is important that your diet and medication complement each other. It is advised by doctors that you should take small, frequent meals to prevent the sugar level from shooting up. You should not suffer from hypoglycaemia (low sugar) either. Sudden weight loss is also not recommended. If you are overweight, you should lose the extra pounds, not suddenly but at the rate of about 2 pounds a week. Related complications: You need to be aware of the complications and allied diseases that arise out of diabetic conditions. These may be heart, kidney and liver problems. Eye and foot care are absolutely essential as high sugar levels can cause irreparable damage to these. Keeping this in mind regular health check up is an integral part of diabetes care. Exercise is an important part of diabetes regulation. So, a proper balance of diet, exercise and medications is required for you to keep diabetes under control to enable you to lead a normal life.
