Diabetes is characterized by a lack of insulin in the body, or the lack of cells within the body to respond properly to insulin. Whether you are diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, you will need to address lifestyle changes to maintain optimum health. Millions of people are diagnosed with diabetes every year in the United States alone, and the health condition is three times more prevalent today than it was forty years ago. Why? The main contributing factor to developing diabetes is lack of proper vitamins (“natural nutritional supplements”) and a high-fat, high calorie diets that leads to excessive weight gain.

Diabetes, if left untreated, can lead to stroke, heart attacks and a number of other conditions that can be prevented using proper diet, medication, or nutritional supplements. Eating a properly balanced diet that contains ample vitamins and minerals is one of the best ways to prevent diabetes. So will avoiding eating large meals or even skipping meals, as doing so will increase glucose in your system. Some of the most common symptoms of diabetes in relation to high blood sugar may be:

    1. Excessive urination

    2. Weakness or fatigue

    3. Nausea, vomiting and rapid breathing

Symptoms usually identified with low blood sugar may be:

    1. Fatigue and hunger

    2. Trembling, accompanied by sweating

    3. Headaches and vision problems

    4. Extreme sleepiness, confusion and fainting

A properly balanced diet, complete with an adequate number of vitamins, minerals and other natural ingredients goes a long way toward helping the body get back on track and improving health. Some natural ingredients that have been shown to help reduce the chances of developing diabetes are Alpha Lipoic Acid, Vitamin E, Gymnema, Bilberry and Chromium, taken in the form of nutritional supplements or in their natural state, found in a variety of foods.

Chromium is a trace mineral that is vital for health by helping the body to break down fats and proteins as well as the utilization of sugars produced by such food breakdown. Chromium serves as the starting point that allows insulin to attach to certain receptors, or transport components, that enable glucose to enter a cell. Where does chromium come from? Vegetables, especially broccoli, mushroom and beans and lentils provide adequate amounts of this vital ingredient. It is also found in foods containing whole grain products and most meat.

If you don’t receive an adequate health-y, balanced, nutritional diet, vitamin nutritional supplements contain chromium in a number of combinations, including chromium picolinate, chromium chloride and chromium polynicotinate. Newer vitamin nutritional supplements contain chromium in the form of chromium histidin too. Studies have shown that chromium picolinate affects certain blood sugar levels in those diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Chromium picolinate is believed to decrease insulin resistance, reduce triglyceride levels and reduce blood glucose levels, all of which may help to reduce the amount of medication you may need to take. However, remember that there is no cure for diabetes, though with proper treatment and monitoring, a properly balanced diet with health supplements may prevent the condition from growing worse, and even prevent the condition in others.

Before treating yourself with chromium or any type of natural health vitamin or mineral nutritional supplements, talk to your doctor or health practitioner about using a combination of dietary ingredients in combination with any medication he prescribes for you.
