Vitamin and mineral nutritional supplements aren't just for people with certain conditions or issues that they want to deal with, though certainly many people purchase such items for specific health issues such as acne, heart health, or digestive problems. However, a growing number of adults in the United States currently take a multi-vitamin or nutritional supplement as part of their daily health routine. Do they really work, or are they just a waste of money?

Many people don't realize that overall health is a fine balancing act of elements, vitamins and minerals, all of which are necessary for optimum health. It is more than simply having enough of each vitamin, we must also make sure we don't get too much of certain nutrients or else others may become depleted. Since the body doesn't manufacture many of vitamins and minerals, we must ingest them in our diets. Unfortunately, the vast majority of American people don't get the daily-recommended allowance of such vital minerals and vitamins, yet alone eat properly to begin with. Vitamins, minerals and nutritional supplements have been around for decades, but in the past, taking a handful of them put you in the category of a "health nut". Such regimens were usually relegated to dedicated vegetarians or others who eschewed fast food, sodas and today's zapped dinners.

However, more people are realizing the benefits to maintaining that fine balance, as the twenty first century gets under way. We've never needed nutritional supplements as much as we do now. Information and studies have proven the link between vitamin and mineral deficits and certain diseases. A recent study claims that one out of ten Americans will be diagnosed and die from either cancer, diabetes, heart disease, obesity or any number of serious illnesses. Why the staggering increases? In many cases, the increased death toll has much to do with our poor diet choices and a disregard for the benefits of exercise and healthy lifestyles.

Vitamins and minerals are essential for hormonal balances within the human body, as well as for proper digestion of foods. Essential elements from such digested foods in turn provides fats, proteins and sugars that are used on a cellular level every single minute of our lives. An imbalance of such nutritional supplements can cause entire body systems to go out of whack. Between poor diets, stress, lack of exercise and a general apathy toward overall health, more young people today are developing medical conditions and diseases that used to be relegated to older people.

Nutritional supplements and vitamins, when taken on a daily basis, can help to ensure that our bodies remain in prime working order. As we age, our bodies start to fall apart, but why help it along by depriving the body of what it needs to make your day worthwhile? Taking vitamins is vital to maintain good health, especially for those always on the go or those who don't keep regular hours.

Vitamins and minerals not only support the body as it works throughout our day, they also help to provide healing and prevent illness. A recent study found within the Journal of the American Medical Association said that lack of vitamins "is a risk factor for chronic diseases…" Every individual has the power to head off certain illnesses and diseases through proper diet and exercise, but taking nutritional supplements like multi-vitamins make sure that your body has the best chance of resisting illness, or overcoming illness, than not taking anything. Unless you eat a properly balanced diet on a daily basis, it is a good idea to consider taking a multivitamin or other nutritional supplements to ensure your body is well armed against the stresses and demands of a busy lifestyle.

In the past, doctors have discouraged the use of such nutritional supplements, feeling that people would forego a balanced diet in favor of one pill or tablet, but if you know you don't eat properly or don't have time on a daily basis to make sure that you're getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs to operate, then taking supplements is a good idea to ensure current and future health benefits.
