The purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries. Sports massage is the key to helping alleviating aches and pains associated with sports activities and exercises.

There is an increase in the number of person engaging in sports. Any sport is marked by competitiveness and a demanding exercise. Because of these, the demand for sports massage is also escalating and recognized as a skill which may aid in the recovery and enhance athletic performance of an athlete.

Muscle overuse may often create problems and imbalances in the soft tissues. If neglected, they will not only hinder the athlete's rate of improvement, but also in many cases their performance may well suffer and ultimately the athlete may be susceptible to developing more severe conditions.

Regular sports massage may help athletes prevent injuries. A constant build up of tension in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles themselves which are all with harmful effects.
