Natural Cures for Earache

There are many factors which can lead to otalgia or earache. Among those factors, the first is the buildup of pressure in the eustachian tube. The eustachian tube drains fluids out of the middle ear through the back of the throat. But sometimes, a cold, allergy or sore throat can result in the swelling up and shutting of the eustachian tube. Tonsillitis and sinus infections cause earache as well, particularly among children. When people are in high altitudes or experience rapid change in altitude, for example when flying, an earache may result.

Earache can be a signal that the ear canal is blocked up by an outer object or by earwax. It may be a signal of a perforated or broken eardrum, caused by a hit on the head, infection in the inner ear, suction applied to the ear or the insertion of an outer object into the ear. Usually, "Swimmer's ear" is an ordinary ear infection as well. It is an infection of the outer ear structures. The reason why this condition occurs is that water enters into the ear canal. Bacteria's reproduction in the ear canal results in infection and irritation. Thus we find that for treatment of an earache, treatment of the infection seems to be the most important.

People use many homeopathic and herbal solutions traditionally in the treatment of earache. Anecdotal evidence suggests that these solutions can work well. A natural supplement, belladonna is a strongly recommended homeopathic medicine for the treatment of a throbbing earache. At the same time, Chamomilla, which is used as natural supplement for earache as well, is often used for babies who are a teething. A Echinacea and goldenseal herbal combination formula is a common herbal cures often used in the treatment of earache. Echinacea and goldenseal are used as an antiviral and they can boost the immune system.

Garlic, an antibacterial, can work well in the treatment of earache by healing an ear infection. Heating a few drops of garlic juice in sesame oil and then put them into the ear can sweep any infection away. As a traditional Native American cure, mullein oil is used in relieving swelling and inflammation. The oil is warmed to right above body temperature and one or two drops are put into the infected ear. Make sure to remember that earaches may be a symptom of more serious problems. If the earache is sustained for a period of time or coupled with fever, you should consult a doctor to deal with the problem. It is necessary to have antibiotics in the treatment of a long-lasting earache, and sometimes eardrops may be used as well.
