On Thursday, May 3, the United States Senate voted 63-28 in favor of an amendment that would change the current federal law to allow the importation of cheaper prescription drugs from Canada and other countries. According to the Associated Press, the amendment would hopefully drive down the ridiculously high prices currently charged by the major drug manufacturers. Sen. Byron Dorgan from N.D, said, “The fact is, we are paying the highest prices for brand-name prescription drugs in the world and that's not fair. Let's make the global economy work for everybody.” According to USNews.com, if finalized, “The measure would allow pharmacies and drug wholesalers to import Food and Drug Administration-approved medicines from Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan and New Zealand, where drugs can cost two-thirds less.” Even if the legislation is passed, the bill will likely never actualize. The US drug industry and the White House vehemently oppose the legislation on grounds that medications from other countries are not safe. The Bush administration has stated their intentions to veto any legislation that would allow the importation prescription medication from foreign countries. The drug industry fiercely apposes allowing prescription drug imports because it could leave the nation vulnerable to dangerous counterfeits. If this is true, and the big pharma is concerned about the American people, why don’t they lower their prices. Americans pay more than double the amount that other countries pay for their prescription medication; if the pharmaceutical companies would lower their prices, Americans would not seek other methods of filling their prescriptions. The truth is, they are only worried about maintaining their monopoly on the American drug market.
