Why do my TROPICAL fish need aquarium CHILLERS?!

The fact is that even tropical fish need cool water to swim in and there is a good reason for that. In the wild they would hide in marine plants and find the shadier parts of the reefs in order to rest. However, in many tanks this does not provide the same comfort.

Hot water will not hold oxygen as well as cool water. That is a fact. Less oxygen in the water can lead to your fish becoming lethargic, ill and eventually even dying. This is why aquarium chillers are so often thought of as essential products for fish owners.

So how do you know if you are one of the people that need an aquarium chiller?

Well the ideal temperature for a fish only aquarium is between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Dip a thermometer in if you aren't sure and check your aquarium's temperature. Be sure to do this in the middle of summer too to make sure that your fish are not overheating and are getting enough oxygen. This is especially important for those of you in the southern states.

If you need to run aquarium lights for 12 hours a day then it is likely that your aquarium might get too hot and you may have no choice but to buy a chiller.

Do NOT unplug your aquarium heater, even if the tank is too hot. Any aquarium heater that s working properly will shut off when the tank is at the right temperature. Unplugging would cause it to become far too cold during the night.

If at any time of the year your aquarium is becoming warmer than that then for the sake of your fish's welfare you need to consider buying a chiller. Air conditioning alone will rarely do the job and to allow your tank to become too hot would be cruel to your fish.

Also, if you are keeping a live reef aquarium or any tank invertebrates then you NEED a chiller in order to ensure that they are safe and healthy. These tanks heat up far quicker than any other type.
