The group of six seems to find peace, friendship and purpose only within the spelling bee competition. Through the show the audience truly identifies with some of the characters and may find themselves hoping for the one they relate with to win it all.
One thing which makes this show more unique then most is the factor of inviting four audience members to join in the fun. Before each show time the production gives some questions and interviews to people attending the show and picks four people to join the cast and participate in the spelling bee. This adds a nice risk factor, creates an opening for improvised humor to occur and makes each show unique and different every time. The show not only received great reviews and audience attendance but was nominated for six Tony Awards of which it won two including Best Book of a Musical and Best Features Actor in a Musical.
