The main character of the play “Brilliant Lies” written by Williamson is Gary. Definitely the audience does not like him. He is a racist and a misogynist. But during the play our attitude might change and Gary may even obtain some kind of sympathy. The author shows the timeless conflict between men and women. Williamson’s dramatic style is realistic. While using the everyday language in his play and concerning the topical issues of the society of the present day, Williamson makes a real portrait of Australia in the 90s. The characters in “Brilliant Lies” cannot be called complicated as most of them represent a different feature, so they are all rather simple. Each one has a different opinion, moral attitude and choice. We realize at once where this or that character stands. For instance Paul. This guy is a high-minded Christian. His character all the time conflicts with his father, a rude alcoholic Brian. Brian often complains that the fact his son became a bloody Christian disappoints him worst of all. The question of the nature of truth is also among the top issues of the play. Katy and Marion try to find the right answer, and each of them consider herself to stand on the truth side. It is much easier not to live up to some principles, but simply to fight for them. But it happens in life that people have absolutely opposite desires and very often they just can’t choose. Don’t ride on two horses moving in different directions. Think more and don’t you hesitate when you get the right answer! Is your answer possible to be right at all?
