“The Scream” created by Edvard Munchis is a confronting picture of an lonely figure standing on a bridge and clutching his ears; the eyes and mouth of the figure are widely open in a shriek of pain. Edvard Munch “The Scream” has become the brightest symbol of psychic suffering. The “friends” of this screaming figure is clear in the background. It should be noted that the distance, indistinctness and lack of participation of these figures are somewhat close to Nora’s relationships. Since the figure happens to be distorted with nervousness, the two men are showing no sympathetic or anxiety for the screamer. The bridge is a symbol of a journey to the other world. This mirrors Nora’s path to the discovery of herself and her great effort to travel out of the imagined world to actuality. Munch depicts his inspiration for the painting. He says that he was walking down a pathway with his friends—there was sunset— abruptly the sky became blood red — he paused, feeling worn out, and then leaned on the hedge—there were tongues of flames and blood at the dark blue fjord and the town—his friends walked on, along with him who stood near the fence trembling with anxiety—then he sensed an endless shriek passing through nature. So, this picture can reflect the inner world of Nora’s mind. This painting shows the mental suffering Nora is experiencing, but the lack of care of her “friends” depicted in the background proves that Nora obviously never communicates her difficulties to others. It as well shows that Nora’s state of mind deforms the world surrounding her too in order to suit Nora’s perceptions. This is clear from the fierce swirls in the pink sky and dark blue fjord which are directed to reflect Nora’s emotion.
