Okonkwo is a main character in the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. The central problem in the novel is the feeling of fear. Okonkwo has a fear of becoming ”a woman”. He acts rude and cruel. But he does not behave like his father, and it satisfies him. Okonkwo has a son, Nwoye. But the proverb “like father, like son” is definitely not about them two. They are so much different, their views on life are totally opposite. While Okonkwo does his best to look manly, as this is the main thing for him, it is absolutely not important for his son. Okonkwo does not understand his son’s philosophy of life and beats Nwoye. Fortunately for poor kid the Christians came and were looking for new people. And so Nwoye joined their church. It was that good opportunity to leave his severe father. Okonkwo was exciled. Inadvertently he kills one of the villagers. In order to prove his strength and masculinity he takes the weapon of the crime with him to the council meeting. All this led to Okonkwo’s excile for the term of seven years. Once Okonkwo had a dream: he wanted to be the most respected Umuofian clansman, the most successful and well-known. But it didn’t happen. His inappropriate behavior spoiled all his plans. He wanted behave masculine, but didn’t actually understood what it really meant. He thought acting brutal he wouldn’t behave in a female way. It’s true, women act differently. But being savage one would never become chivalrous, though this is the best way of men’s behavior. Okonkwo eventually dies. When he came back to his native village, it is no longer a strong and powerful place. Okonkwo cannot bear it, so he decides the best is to hang himself. Very courageous!
