The city of Florence experienced different times. After the death of one of its rulers, Lorenzo the Magnificent, the French King Charles VIII invaded the state-city. Savonarola became Florentine political and religious leader. He prohibited the artefacts of contemporary art, Michelangelo had to move to Rome. In Rome he produced his first life-size statue – Bacchus. When Michelangelo was 21 he was commissioned by Jean de Villiers, the Cardinal de la Groslaye. Young sculptor had to create the Virgin Mary. The work was called the Pieta – Mary was grieving over her dead son, Jesus. So when Michelangelo was only 23, he had been famous already. Florence was a republic again, the artist granted the order of the establishment of his support. Michelangelo’s political views may be easily noticed in his works. Indisputably the sculpture of David was one of his greatest works. According to the Bible, David was destined to become the second king of Israel. David defeated Goliath, the Philistine monster. He used only sling and stone. According to the agreement Michelangelo had two years to make the sculpture. His commission contained 400 ducats. Michelangelo returned to Florence as a famous renaissance artist and sculptor. The sculpture of David was commissioned by the Operai of the Arte della Lana, and had to be ready by the 16th of August, 1501. The statue was officially unveiled on the 8th of September, a brilliant display of Michelangelo’s talent. Michelangelo’s David was 18 feet high and weighed several tones. Soon the sculpture became the symbol of Florence. More and more people considered him to be the greatest Italian sculptor. On the 25th of January the well-known artists were choosing a place for the David. Among the debaters were Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Perugino, Filippino Lippi and Piero de Cosimo. They decided to erect Michelangelo’s statue at the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio.
