The room in Alfred Leslie’s picture 'Thirteen Americans' is 3-Dimensional. The painter makes use of overlapping of the forms to depict the effect of room. Moreover, he uses the foreshortening method as may be seen in depicting of the dog. The comparative positioning traced in this picture is the most exciting characteristic since the painter has positioned the bigger figures at the back of the smaller ones with the intention that even comparative positioning does not make the bigger figures come out lesser than that opposite it. This is due to the closeness of the forms; the bigger forms are extremely close to the minor ones although they are positioned at the back them. The name 'Thirteen Americans' is evocative of the theme of the picture. It seems that the figures in this picture are significant as much as necessary to be identified as the 'thirteen Americans'. Though the characters in this picture are obviously very dissimilar from one another in relation to their look and age, people are still illustrated in close nearness to each other. This implies that they include something similar to be painted in one picture or also the painter is striving to put down to harmony. Use their variety to see a point or portray something. Besides, the name implies a weight or importance to the people depicted as if they will be known like the 'thirteen Americans'. It never looks as if the picture was created for one person purpose. The thirteen Americans at the picture are an excellent example of variety and that perplexes me whether the integration of such dissimilar groups of society and the uncomplicated but particular name 'Thirteen Americans' is purposeful and meaningful to the artist. Maybe then it is attempting to show all the variety of people in his country. From this angle it omits nobody and the overwhelming effect to anybody in spite of his ethnicity or color of the skin would be enjoyable and pleasing. It is the type of picture that one and all may relate to, since it gives the impression to have some fundamental thought of equality. The painter’s choice of depicting this painting on so great scale is incredibly important to the painting as well since it helps us to recognize the significance of the ones who are illustrated on a full-size scale. To sum up, the painter manages to lend a very realistic result to his picture.
