How to tell the story abort the great artist who lost the battle with drugs? Whatever you do you will always find someone who says that’s only one side of his life. In my opinion Jan Kidawa-Blonski (director) made a great movie. He showed life of Ryszard Riedel (to be honest only the part of his life, but probably the most important for band supporters) in very evocative way.
To be honest again I have to say that the Tomasz Kot (who starred Ryszard Riedel) had his great contribution in the movie with probably his best movie part in his life. Kot is absolutely authentic in both parts – when he plays Ryszard Riedel as vocalist and when he plays Ryszard Riedel as D.A.
He added lot of warm to the character. Really, it’s hard to dislike Ryszard Riedel even when he is totally addicted to drugs.
The movie starts with the dialog:
- What would you do if you have another life?
- I would not to take this crap (drugs)
The story is based around the drug addiction. We see great artist who is systematically, methodically and consistently going deeper and deeper in his addiction. And even if you never heard about band called Dzem and Ryszard Riedel you will find how the movie ends easily. There’s no happy end in the movie as it was no happy end in life. You will find here shock scene, when Rysiek begs for some drugs. In exchange he is ready to give his wedding ring only to get some drugs. And it’s not because it his will. One of the best and most charismatic Polish vocalists has no money! And here we have another paradox. I am not sure why he is broke. Is it because of drugs or because of the times when he lived?
Music is just a background in the movie. But it’s great background, no doubt. In the movie you will see the battle for life but this is the battle with sad ending. Ryszard is losing every moment but from time to time he’s trying to fight. Unfortunately the addiction it’s too hard. Vocalist has a hallucinations, he has big problems with singing. The end is obvious.
It’s a very sad movie as the story of Ryszard Riedel life was very sad.
His movie is a warning for everybody, who thinks that drugs are safe and nothing wrong happen when you take some. The example of Ryszard Riedel shows that’s not. No matter if you are great artists or usual man. If you think you can win the battle with drugs you are dead. As Ryszard Riedel is.
