Whether you are planning a backyard BBQ, wedding or corporate event hiring the caricaturist can be a challenge. This article will help anyone have an easier time finding, interviewing and hiring talented artists. I am the office manager in Jess Perna’s Studio where we supply party caricature entertainment to all areas of Southern California and I am well versed on the important issues.
I am the promoter and office manager for Jess Perna Studio whose sites are Classyartwork.com and PortraitsbyJessPerna.com. Jess draws party art caricatures in Southern California and has drawn over 30,000 party caricatures. He also creates finely crafted, funny, custom made caricatures used for advertising art, gifts, invitations, stationery and sign-in boards. The custom art is ordered online and by phone. The art is drawn from photos and then shipped nationwide or by email as digital images. We give excellent customer service, attention to detail, innovative, beautiful, realistic caricatures which do not insult but actually make people look their best. Jess always captures the personality of the subject. Working with an artist who is not only very talented and creative but has a great sense of humor is a delight.
When you are hiring a caricaturist for an event you can be confident that if all the questions and concerns below are satisfied you are in good, professional hands.
Handy checklist of customer concerns and questions. 1- How many portrait caricatures (head only) can be drawn per hour? 2- How many full body caricatures can be drawn per hour? 3- Do you need more than one caricaturist given the length of the event? 4- Can the caricaturist find a colleague if you need more than one artist? 5- Can caricaturist’s supply samples to prove ability to capture a likeness? 6- Is the caricaturist’s personality compatible with your event? 7- Does the caricaturist handle the arrangements in a timely and professional manor? 8- Does the caricaturist supply protective plastic bags for each guest’s picture? 9- What are the caricaturists billing options? 10- Is the caricaturist willing to travel to the area of your event? 11- If the event is outdoors do you have shade for the guest and caricaturist? 12- Is there an electricity supply for the caricaturist’s needs? 13- If there is no electricity, then what are the lighting conditions? 14- What is the type and size of paper used by the caricaturist’s? 15- Does the caricaturist’s draw in a style which will offend or flatter guests? 16- Does the caricaturist have letters or previous customer comments to show you? 17- Does the caricaturist have a contract to guarantee they will deliver as promised?
Please remember that asking for phone references for an entertainer will be an invasion of privacy of their previous clients. Artists are asked many times a day for such references. I don’t think most people would want to receive hundreds of phone calls a year from the potential customers of someone they hired for a one day event. Would you want this burden after hiring an entertainer? Most artists do have letters of recommendation or testimonials on their websites that protect the identity of those who were kind enough to have written a thank you.
I work in an art studio handling the business end of custom art orders. I understand the thought process of the artist as well as the concerns of the clients. This comprehension of the two diverse worlds enables me to be a successful bridge between the two. The artist is content to draw and not have to explain the process to clients and the clients are pleased to ask their myriad of questions to someone who actually enjoys talking to them.
