Phish is a popular American music band that belongs to the jam genre of music. It is much notable for its musical improvisations that have been extended by their jam sessions and also the cult following. They had been formed at the University of Vermont back in the early eighties… the year 1983 to be precise. The band is comprised of four members who gave several performances for more than twenty years until they eventually broke up in the year 2004. The band has announced a while ago that they would be reuniting for a tour that is scheduled for the next year that is the year 2009.
They will begin the concert with three shows that will be held at the venue of the Hampton Coliseum that is situated in Hampton, Virginia. Their music can be labeled as a mix of several genres. These genres include rock, jazz, bluegrass and funk to name a few. All of their concerts individually have been extremely unique in all aspects from the songs performed to the order of their appearance and their manner of performance.
Although this group has not received excessive radio play or even excessive MTV exposure, Phish has managed to develop a very large and a dedicated fan following owing to the word of mouth through the site Phish.net. This had initially been a mailing list and then a Usenet newsgroup but is now a fulltime website. Rolling Stone have stated them to be "the most important band of the 90s" and have also declared the respective band had helped a lot in not only spawning the new wave of bands but also their improvisation and grooves are very good.
Phish as already been mentioned had been formed at The University of Vermont in the year of 1983 by the guitarists named Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth, the bassist named Mike Gordon and the drummer named Jon Fishman. Their debut gig had been at a Halloween dance that had been conducted in the basement of the ROTC dormitory.
They had been termed as the Blackwood Convention owing to the reference to a bidding convention in the contract bridge. As for their second gig (and their first with the new band name Phish) had been conducted on the 3rd of November, held in the basement of the Slade Hall at UVM. The band had later been joined by another member who had been the percussionist named Marc Daubert. He had been included in the fall of the year 1984 but had left in the beginning of the following year.
Page McConnell had made an entry into the band as its keyboardist in the month of September. Holdsworth departed from the band after he graduated in the year 1986. With his departure the band's lineup had been composed of "Trey, Page, Mike, and Fish." This lineup remained for the rest of the respective band's lifespan.
