Chinese railways turnover touched 2.44 Trillion tons-kilometer during the period January 2006 to December 2006. The rise was 5.9% higher than in the same period of 2005, stated Wang Yongping, Railway Ministry spokesman. China's railways transported 1.109 billion commuters in 2006's first eleven months, up 8.3 % annually that was 98% of the entire year's transportation goal, Wang said. The railway industry is an important part of China's comprehensive transportation system. In past some years, railway mileage & its traffic, both have gone up rapidly, however, the share of market of Chinese railways transportation has observed a declining tendency. Because of limitations of the system, China's railway sector still remains behind in areas of investment & financing. This causes construction of railways that's not able to meet the economy development demand. Su Shunhu, vice director, transport division, Railway Ministry, said that the rail container transport is the future of rail transport. Shunhu added that the railway shipment is much more safe, speedy, & energy-efficient as compared to shipment by trucks & ships. Wang further added that the Chinese railway transportation segment had continued to rise quickly & the turnover for the year 2006 would be very high. As per the RNCOS report "China Transportation Sector Analysis (2006-2007)", Railways remain the most popular mode of transportation for domestic cargo due to low cost. On the other hand, roads are popular mode for domestic passengers mainly due to growth in motorization.
