The new film that was released last week would have completely escaped my attention had it not been for the large posters that were promoting the film in the various shopping malls. It was just one of those instances that got me thinking about the importance of promotional and advertising medium even in our day to day lives. In this age of information and technology, while the advertisers and marketers are vying for the consumer attention through various medium of communication, the consumer is eager for information as well. In every aspect of our lives, be it on the domestic, personal or even official front, information is the key to successful living. Awareness about the world around us is crucial for survival in this competitive world and advertisers, marketers and promoters strive to fulfill this demand. Innovative mediums of communication find their way into our lives on a regular basis. A new brand of shampoo in the market needs as much attention for promotion as a newly patented medicine. Potential consumers are flooded with promotional offers and attractive schemes to tempt them into buying the product or service on sale. The flexibility of being either textual or graphic or both and the various mediums on which they are easily printable, make large posters a popular choice. Large posters are designed to be attractive to the eyes and thereby grab the attention of potential consumers even in a crowded area where other promotional mediums are competing for attention. Large posters can be used for many purposes although they are mainly popular in entertainment segment like musical shows, films and such other events. Large posters may also be educational in nature and used by academic institutes to promote a message. Some posters have also become valuable over the years and are now considered vintage, commanding a high price and cherished by collectors. The vintage posters are usually framed and matted for preserving over a longer period. The most conventional size for regular posters is 24 by 36 inches, although the size is expanded or shrunk according to the requirement of the client. Large posters have been around for a very long time and even some of Shakespeare’s plays were advertised through this medium. The posters are re-invented over time to suit the varying needs of the clients and emerge as a new and better medium of communication time and again. The cost effectiveness and easy adaptability to the advertiser’s requirements make large posters a much desired form of promotion.
