Perhaps there are many questions that company and organization leaders have, but one of the largest is how should we encourage my team and become the leader in my industry? How do we stomp on our competition? We cannot relax and take our success for granted. Our competitors are fierce and anxious to take back market share, produce the next blockbuster product, or invent some new technology to better serve customers.
We have many advantages if we choose to develop them, but perhaps our largest advantage over our competition is our culture and people. By an ongoing direction in teaching, inspiring and selecting only the best, we should always be the leader in any industry. If we hire only the most motivated people, we will continue to provide only the best service and most quality products and have the best reputation as being a top company to work for.
In order to achieve this goal, managers can locate many leadership theories and concepts. The problem here is that many of these theories actually have no application in the real world because of their complexity. Others don't go into detail and give just a basic overview of leadership qualities and never really do any actual coaching. Today's manager requires tools that are direct, that will enable managers to help create a culture of continuous improvement.
Leaders need specific solutions that can be applied to a problem quickly. If there is a problem, they want a solution and they want it immediately. We cannot relax and take our success for granted. Our competitors are fierce and anxious to take back market share, produce the next blockbuster product, or invent some new technology to better serve customers.
This by no means is some sort of checklist or an easy quick fix. Even though these steps that you will read are not hard, the only way that something will be accomplished is if the leader takes those steps and applies them. Application is vital in this situation.
A Road Map
Coaching skills always need to be refined and improved. It is the same with following a road map. Every time you set out on a long road trip you will encounter unexpected weather or road conditions that will require you to take detours and use good common sense. The same goes for coaching. Not every problem is going to be the same and you will need to understand each problem separately but apply the same basic principles in order to solve each problem
What is Coaching?
Coaching is a skill that leaders practice as they guide others. Coaching requires courage to address difficult issues, and engage others in growth opportunities.
Coaching is a process, not an event. We must be able to present ourselves well continually.
A good coach is open to new ideas, and to the possibility that he/she has an incomplete understanding of the situation.
Conclusion
Be patient and persistent. Change frequently happens slowly for people. If you encounter someone who wants to make a quantum leap, it's a real bonus. Enjoy it, but remember that the real work of a leader is helping those who don't immediately recognize the need or opportunity to improve. Keep in mind that when you coach you won't be receiving accolades and embraced as a hero. Most people need time to process and grasp the magnitude of what you are conveying to them.
