Thousands of vulnerable elderly residents living alone in rural Ireland are being asked to pay EUR65 plus VAT in order to have their personal alarms such as burglar alarm,intruder alarm re-programmed as a result of a decision to change the prefix for telephone numbers in many areas of the country.
According to Labour spokesperson on Social and Family Affairs Willie Penrose TD, this unexpected development is a disgrace.
Under the scheme elderly people are entitled to a once-off grant of EUR300 towards the cost of installing the alarms which rely on the phone system for their operation.
"The scheme has given thousands of people the security of knowing that in the event of a fall or being faced with an intruder, they can call for instant assistance by way of a pendant worn around the neck. Over, 5000 individuals received such grants during 2005 alone," he said.
However, in large parts of the country telephone numbers have been changed over recent months, a move that's causing immense inconvenience for elderly people on low incomes.
"In my own area, for instance, the prefix has been changed from 044 to 04493. As a result of this the personal alarms now have to be reprogrammed and elderly people are facing charges of EUR65 plus VAT from the commercial companies that install the alarms, in order to get this done.
"People did not look to have their telephone numbers changed and should not therefore have to meet these charges," said Willie.
