Bi-Focal Sun Readers
Summer is just around the corner, and I really cannot describe with words the how the hottest new item to hit the sunglass market in years: Bifocal Sunglasses. These are over-the-counter sunglasses with tiny bifocal reading lenses built right in. Wearing them can be a life changing experience for us Boomers who spend a lot of time outside. Have you ever been at an outdoor event such as your child’s Graduation, a tennis match, a concert, a fair, a race track, or a football game and find yourself wearing two pairs of glasses? It’s not only annoying but inconvenient because you need your sunglasses to see at a normal distance and to protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays of the sun, but when you want to read the program or check your cell phone you have to switch over to your reading glasses (which are dangling around your neck somewhere in the way, of course). Maybe you get pretty good at fumbling back and forth between both pairs glasses without missing too many calls or seeing the players score. Or maybe you do what I used to do: wear my sunglasses on top of my readers, even thought you are creating a silly spectacle of yourself (pun intended).
A few years ago, I finally got sick and tired of this problem. I live on a horse farm and I need to be able to see the directions on a bottle of horse medicine when I am outside. I found myself constantly running back and forth between the barn and the house to switch between readers and sunglasses, each time forgetting to bring the second pair it seemed. Finally, I paid big bucks for prescription sunglasses with a bifocal reading lens so I would always be ready to read outside when the need arose. Two weeks later they fell off in a field and my horse promptly stepped on and destroyed my new investment. That’s when I decided to make it my mission to find something similar I could purchase which was ready-to -wear.
After a little investigating, I was in for a pleasant surprise. Searching the internet, I discovered over-the-counter sunglasses with tiny bifocal reading lenses built right in. There were just a few styles to choose from, so I ordered a pair which looked attractive in a nice tortoise color to match my eyes. A few days later it felt just like Christmas when a package arrived for me. I tore it open and took out my new discovery. The sunglasses were nice in a basic sort of way but the bifocal part had a practically invisible line, so that was good. “No one will know” I thought happily. And the moment I tried on my new sun readers, I was hooked. I could even drive and see distances normally but still be able to read a map with one pair of glasses!!!
As I mentioned, at first there were not many styles to choose from and they were difficult to find. Whenever I wore my first few pairs of sun readers all my friends were amazed and wanted to know where I got them. That was about ten years ago. Now Sun-Focals (as I like to call them) are fast becoming all the rage. Though most retail outlets do not carry them, just Google the words Sun Readers, Reading Sunglasses or Bifocal Sunglasses and you will find a host of internet shops with an ample supply all of which come in a dazzling assortment of shapes, styles and colors imaginable to suit just about anyone. Love Swarovski Crystals? Dragonflies? Bright colors? Sophisticated styles? Wide lens? Narrow face? They are all there for the choosing.
And sun readers are not just for women. Plenty of guys are wearing them, too. Men who work out of doors, such as contractors, delivery men, carpenters, coaches, truck drivers, pilots, mailmen etc. I have recently discovered the world’s most useful readers sunglasses. They are also perfect for men who enjoy sporting activities such as golf and fishing. Men tend to especially appreciate Aviator and Wrap Around styling. Men’s bifocal sunglasses make a great gift as well.
Some prescription outlets have begun to carry non-prescription bifocal sunglasses for their customers who do not need correction for distance viewing as an alternative to a much costlier prescription pair of sunglasses. This is especially true in areas in the country that have been hard hit with the downturn of the economy. People who have lost their jobs have also lost their vision plans and many find ready-to-wear glasses an affordable alternative. Whatever the case, Bifocal Sunglasses are an item that any fashion conscious baby boomer should not be without.
Tr-90 Memory Plastic for an Ultra-light Frame Design.
During your Internet searches for over-the-counter readers and sunglasses, you may have noticed the certain frame styles proclaiming the wonders of TR-90, a lightweight, shape-retaining space age plastic polymer that is also extremely long lasting. These claims are not unfounded. Often referred to as “memory plastic”, TR-90 is technically a homopolyamide nylon characterized by a low density material with an extremely high alternative bending strength, making it highly resistant to chemical and UV damage. If you desire super lightweight, flexible, heat-resistant frames for longer comfort wear during sports and leisure time, Tr-90 was made for you! These frames may be a bit more expensive than traditional plastic ones, but you will find the additional cost well worth the investment since they are practically indestructible and so lightweight and comfortable you may forget you are even wearing glasses.
Injected Polycarbonate Polarized Lens
Fishermen, boaters, skiers and drivers often prefer sunglasses which feature polarization to reduce glare ¬¬¬from water and snow. Injected Polycarbonate Polarized Lens lenses offer exceptional strength compared to acrylic polarized lenses and superior optics to traditional polycarbonate lens. The polarized lenses are injected at high pressure to increase optical clarity and de-centered to eliminate distortion. The result is a shatterproof lens that reduces glare and offers unsurpassed optics. There are several lens tinting options, each one designed to perform in specific light conditions, from dawn to dusk, day or night, cloudy or rainy, depending on your individual needs.
For example, certain lens tints are designed for athletes seeking an edge in distinguishing terrain details. They block 100 percent of UVA/UVB rays while increasing light contrast by filtering the blue light spectrum that is responsible for optical blurring and decreased contrast in bright light conditions Golfers, among others, report a profound vision enhancement with spectral tint lenses featuring “object illumination.” By providing a balance of target and background brightness, your ability to see a golf ball in flight or for spotting the subtle breaks of a putting green is enhanced greatly.
Aspheric Lenses: Decentered, Polycarbonate Technology
You may have noticed that some of your recent Internet eyewear purchases arrive with a sticker which says “Ultra Thin Aspheric Lens” and wondered, “What the heck is that?” Well, advanced optical design technology allows aspheric eyeglass lenses to be made with flatter curves than conventional lenses, giving them a slimmer, more attractive profile. The more complex front surface gradually changes in curvature from the center of the lens out to the edge. This means there is less bulging of the lens from the frame, which gives the eyewear a slimmer, more flattering profile. It also makes it possible for someone with a strong prescription to wear a larger selection of frames without worry of the lenses being too thick… and heavy!!!
Conventional lenses have a front surface that is spherical, meaning it has the same curve across its entire surface, much like a baseball. Looking away from the center of the lens, either left or right or up and down, a slight distortion is created. Depending on the corrective strength, aspheric lens designs reduce or entirely eliminate these distortions for a wider field of view and better peripheral vision. The world looks more natural to the wearer, and the wearer's eyes look more natural to everyone else. This wider zone of clear imaging is why expensive camera lenses feature aspheric curves. The combination of an aspheric design lens with TR-90 frames is highly desirable, especially for people who wear their glasses over a long period of time with a comfort which is unattainable with conventional glass or plastic lenses/frames.
Comfort and Durability Technology
When making important eyewear purchasing decisions, you should also consider some recent design elements offered on newer styles which can dramatically improve the “comfort” factor, depending on your personal preferences and factors such as the shape of the bridge of your nose and brow. Do the glasses have adjustable “rocking” nose pads or a molded nose rest? Check out styles which feature a soft elastic or “jelly” nose pad, which provides a slip-free surface while eliminating those pressure points which can become annoying to some of us even after a wearing our glasses for a just a short period of time. If you spend a lot of time in hot or humid conditions, you may want to try the new, top vented lenses (a ventilation channel is placed between the lens and the frame) which limits fogging while improving airflow.
Last but not least, a scratch-resistant hardcoat offers added lens durability. Many of today’s fashions come with a great micro-fiber cleaning cloth or carrying pouch, which is very handy when you want to see clearly (be sure they are free of dirt particles prior to wiping, however!) If a hard case is not included with your purchase, consider spending a few more dollars for a hard case, which will provide the very best overall protection for your new investment. Cases are available in a fun assortment of sizes and colors to suit every lifestyle
In today’s fast paced technological environment, new manufacturing breakthroughs occur so frequently that it is just a matter of time before exciting new styles and features of eyewear are developed (maybe by the time you finish reading this article). When considering your vision needs, the Internet and its vast array of resources offers the best way for Baby Boomers to find sunglasses, reading glasses, bifocal sunglasses and sports eyewear featuring the perfect marriage of style and technology at an affordable price.
