There are times when I sit at my computer and stare with contempt at my printer. I sit there in anger as I think about how much money I have spent on buying new ink cartridges at least once a month. I know I’m not the only one. Just the other day, a friend told me that they finally accepted that cartridges are ridiculously expensive and decided to write everything by hand from now on. (This friend isn’t stable by the way.)

Instead of using all of that negative energy to smash my printer with the nearest sledgehammer I can find, I decided to channel some it towards the good side. I turned a negative to a positive and found a few ways to save some money on inkjet cartridges for my printer.

There are a number of ways to go about it if you just think creatively. The secret is to minimize the ways your printer wastes paper and ink. Here are some of easier ways I found how.

    • Nothing is better than free – With printers being so inexpensive and constantly improving, many people are buying new printers a long time before their old models quit working. If you're really in need of a printer, but can't afford one at the moment, ask around with friends and family. Someone is sure to have a printer they are looking to part with.

    • Buy a refurbished printer - For many of us, the idea of buying a used product means that we are resorting to buying secondhand products, hand-me-downs. In actuality, you are getting a printer that is fixed by the original manufacturer and inspected by top rated consumer watchdog officials. Be sure what you are buying refurbished and not just used.

    • Get a low-cost laser for printing text - You can easily pick up a nice laser printer for about $150 that will print faster and better quality than any inkjet. Not only will you be getting long-lasting text printing, but also will save money in the long run since toner costs a lot less than ink.

    • Extend the life of your toner cartridge – We’ve all been there and panicked. You look at your printer and it reads "Toner Low". The good news is that it may not yet be time for a new cartridge. You can still get a few more pages to print before it is totally empty.

    • Don't print out Web pages that you don't need - How many times have you printed out a Web page, only to find yourself with two or three extra pages of blank pages or junk like links? You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find how much paper you save just by specifying the page you want printed.

    • Try not to use so much ink - Some printers use more ink than other models. They are just made to different specifications. There is no getting around it. If you are spending a lot more on ink than you thought you would, then try to monitor your ink consumption. Then make a decision about whether a different printer might better cost wise.

    • Don’t forget about a third-party – Wait till you see how much money you can save by buying cartridges from someone other than the printer manufacturer. You do need to be careful whom you buy from. You will find some third-party cartridges use inferior ink which could end up damaging your printer.

    • A little bit of tweaking should do the trick – I know some of us would love to eliminate all paper trails from out desk entirely. Unfortunately, we can’t, but we can try to scale back on how much is littering our desks. Try saving the amount of printed pages by filling up a page with as much information as possible. An example would be using single spacing and smaller-sized lettering.
