International calls become necessary in a lot of situation and in today's growing international businesses, it has become absolutely necessary to maintain international contacts on a regular basis. This is why people are making more international calls than ever.

And the best part about this is that it is quite cheap. In fact, if you do it on your computer, all you have to have is a fast Internet connection, like broadband and you will not need anything else. But this would normally require the other person to have a computer as well. You will be making a computer-to-computer call usually.
If you don't have a computer or if you want to be able to make the calls from your analog phone, many companies have brought out VoIP phones that allow you to make calls like you usually would but the only difference would be that your phone would connected to a modem and your call will be placed over the Internet and not the fixed telephone lines or mobile networks.
With special VoIP services you can call other phone numbers from your computer and they can be either local or long distance. But your costs still remain very minimal. They will only be small fraction of the bill you would've incurred through your normal telephone. So VoIP is really the intelligent way to make international calls and save money while at it.
