         Use of call accounting and other statistical and trend monitoring applications can provide Fortune 500 corporations globally with the tools to improve their business practices and forecast for the future. In the U.S., much attention is given to protecting data, given the rash of identity thefts, not to mention compliance with many information protection regulations such as HIPPA and Sarbanes-Oxley. However, according to an article in Workforce Management Magazine, corporations with an international footprint may be missing the boat on a huge workforce compliance issues overseas -- Employee Data Privacy Rules. International legislation in Europe and other countries now focuses on the protection of employee privacy and data. Especially given that more and more international firms are seeking to consolidate their workforce data and use it to make better decisions. Add to the mix the rise of outsourcing which lends itself to an increased amount of employee data zapped outside of companies and countries. While some multinationals take employee data guidelines seriously, many U.S. firms haven’t done much to meet privacy law, analysts say. A breach of employee data could be as damaging to a company’s reputation as a consumer data breach. According to the article, one such company is working to correct that. General Electric is in the midst of getting European approvals for a worldwide employee privacy policy it has drawn up—a policy that could serve as a model for other firms.
