Learning to play the guitar is a popular choice among many beginners choosing to learn an instrument. One only needs to pick a song from any style or year and there is usually a guitar playing background rhythm or lead solos. The guitar is the soul of many styles of music such as jazz, blues, and rock. It is universal in that it is found in all parts of the world. One can find the guitar being used by a rock band in a crowded 60,000 seat venue or in an intimate setting such as a beach.

The beginner may dream of quickly becoming a rock star but the guitar student soon finds a daunting task when choosing how best to learn the guitar. Usually, after a couple sessions, the excitement dissipates and learning the guitar becomes somewhat a chore. However, if approached in a certain way, learning the guitar can be fun and rewarding.

The beginning student that learns to play a guitar with steel strings will quickly find that the strings start to slow their learning. Sometimes, the fingers become sensitive through pressing and forming notes - playing must cease until the fingertips heal. To prevent this from happening, it is best to start playing guitar with the lightest gauge strings possible. Also, whenever you are not holding the guitar, make it a habit to press a fingernail from your other fingers into a fingertip of your note playing hand. This will help your fingertip to quickly form a callus so that a steel string will not hamper your playing.

One of the quickest ways of learning the guitar is to join/form a band with other members that are learning their respective instruments. You will discover that learning guitar while playing in a band practically forces you to become better immediately because any mistakes are noticeable and you are motivated to play through a song without errors.

Tablature is a type of way for learning a song by actually showing the string and fret position a certain note is played. Learning to play guitar via tablature allows you to learn a song without reading a traditional song sheet. These websites are easily found by searching for “guitar tablature” through the search engines. Tablature or tab sites contain many of the modern day and classic songs from artists of all genres. Instructions for learning guitar by tablature are found on the websites.

Another way to quickly learn the guitar is from an instructor. A good guitar teacher can be found at just about any local music store. It is probably a good idea to learn guitar from an instructor in the beginning so that proper techniques such as tuning, fingering, picking, chord playing, can be quickly learned. Good guitar playing habits is essential at this stage of learning.

If you are under a tight budget, and cannot pay for an instructor, the next best way of learning basic guitar is by videos. There are many guitar videos that will teach the proper guitar playing techniques. You do not need to purchase the video. Guitar videos can be found at most movie rental stores. Or better yet, your local library should have a video that can be borrowed for free. At the same time, you can obtain a stack of guitar books from the library.

Remember that learning to play the guitar does not happen overnight. There will be some days where you will be surprised at how much you have learned. There will be other sessions where it seems you have reached a plateau and cannot improve. Just approach the learning process in stride. Soon, guitar playing will become second nature and you will soon reach your goal whether you want to learn guitar as a hobby or profession.
