Since the inception of online learning, many have wondered whether the lessons of academia can be effectively taught through a computer interface. In truth, there are several areas of education that can’t be conveyed online and do indeed require the combined presence of the student, the instructor and the necessary learning aids. Chemistry comes to mind, and true to form, there are few if any online chemistry degree programs. But what about the study of general business management? Can business savvy and acumen be better garnered or developed in person rather than online? To answer this question, it’s necessary to keep in mind the age we currently live in. Without question, the ability to effectively manage a business requires intelligence, people skills and determination, none of which can be gained through either online or campus based education. What can be taught, however, are the business practices that enable effective communication between employers, employees, customers and other business entities. In the information age, those communications are more often than not created and maintained through contact other than face to face. For this reason, online general business management degree programs from distance learning educational providers offer somewhat of an advantage over those from traditional brick and mortar colleges and universities. The ability to communicate electronically, to transmit information and data through electronic means and to do so with an understanding of how those communications are received on the other end is nothing to be taken lightly. In a world where impersonal presence is the norm, the likelihood of managing a business through these channels is growing at a rapid pace. People write to loved ones online, find information online, read about what interests them online and do their taxes online. Is it any wonder why more people are banking, investing, buying and selling online as well? Within the structure of most businesses, even those with one location, electronic communications between management and personnel is standard practice. From department wide memorandums to company wide initiatives, effective management is not a one on one endeavor, and never has been. As companies grow and personnel are more often allocated to the field and out of the office, being able to manage from afar is crucial. If students are able to schedule their own studies, receive and obtain study materials and communicate with faculty and other students online, they will undoubtedly be better equipped to handle the pressures of business management in the information age.
