Choosing a college major can be a major pain in the neck, especially for working adults attempting to redirect their careers. While new students who haven’t incurred the responsibilities of life in full force may have the luxury of changing direction several times throughout their academic journey, working adults have a different set of priorities when it comes to education. Most working adults must balance the commitments of family, their current jobs and in some cases, second jobs all while attempting to better themselves with the little remaining time available. For this reason, choosing a major is an often arduous task. For starters, few working adults have the time to properly research the best available options. Campus based colleges and universities have academic advisors who can help in this regard, but making an appointment to visit one can require multiple phone calls and a scheduled meeting time that is likely to interfere with a standard work schedule. Online colleges and universities are superior in this regard because they are geared toward working adults and offer academic advisors outside normal business hours. With the help of an academic advisor, prospective students of any age and background can more easily decide whether an educational institution and the programs offered will fit within their schedule. This, however, is just one of the concerns when it comes to picking a major. For those already established in their current industry who wish to use education to open doors that would otherwise remain closed, the course of study is an easy choice. Many working adults, however, want to start a new career with better earning potential. For these individuals, finding a balance between an area of interest and a course of study that will allow them to find employment and meet their financial obligations upon graduation is the key. There are many choices in education that will lead to a position with a high salary, but not all people are cut out for the working environment that accompanies those positions. Likewise, choosing a major purely on the level of interest it inspires can result in degree that may be easier to complete but virtually worthless in the employment market. Anyone contemplating going to college should seriously consider the employment trends of various fields prior to committing themselves to a major.
