6 Steps to Free Yourself From Debt


Ignoring your debt is the worst strategy that will bury you in interest charges and paying only the minimum payments may take you as long as 30 years to pay off your original purchase. The best move is reining the debts and does something to get rid of it. Here are the 6 steps you can take to bring your debt in control:
Step 1: List down what you owe.
The first step of your way out of debt is getting to how much you owe currently. Retrieve all you bills, then list them in order, starting with the largest balance first and put the minimum monthly payment and the interest rate at the side of each debt. Now you know what your current debt situation.
Step 2: Prioritize your debt repayment.
There are various ways to prioritize your debt repayment. You can choose to priority the debt with the largest balance or the one with the higher interest, both serve the same purpose of saving you years of interest charges. You should apply extra money to pay the card's balance which in highest priority. In order to faster your debt repayment, try to double the minimum monthly payment for other cards below the first priority and don't charge any penny to your credit cards, you should be able to be debt free in less than three years.
Step 3: Eliminate credit cards that have 0 balances.
While you are in the process of paying of your debt, don't add new debt into your existing debt by avoiding the use of credit in your purchases, instead use only cash. If you are a person who hard to control yourself from stop using your credit cards, it's better to terminate the cards, but if the credit cards still have balances, terminating the cards means you need to pay the balances in one lump sum. Hence, the alternative way to prevent you from using your credit cards is keep your credit cards at the location that are not convenient to be accessed or just cut the cards into pieces. Once you have cleared the balance of any card, eliminate it permanently by terminating it.
Step 4: Request a copy of your credit report
There may be errors on your credit report that you want to correct it so that it shows you real credit history. You can only do that by request a copy of your credit report from 3 credit bureaus and review the report and check for any error. And if you do make progress toward paying down your debt, you need to make that those progresses are correctly recorded to your credit report.
Step 5: Make a budget plan
If you want to pay of your debt successfully, you need to know about your money flow. Hence, a budget plan is important to help you keep track on where you money will go. And it prevents you from using your money in free-spending ways, and once you know how your money will be spent, some of optional expenses can be cut and more money can be allocated toward your debt.
Step 6: Get help if needed
Sometime thing won't go as smoothly as we plan for especially when you have an overwhelming debt that beyond your financial capability to handle by yourself. Then, you may need professional help. Don't be afraid to let the counselor know your debt problem because you are not alone as many others have the same debt problem, and you may get more options to resolve your debt by getting consultation from those financial experts.
