Can I Get a Cell Phone After a Bankruptcy?

Sadly, getting a cell phone after a bankruptcy isn't as easy as it normally is, but there are still ways to make it work.

If you've just discharged your debts and haven't worked on rebuilding your credit yet there are really only two options for you.

The first is to get a prepaid plan. These don't have credit restrictions and work very simply. You buy a cheap cell phone and buy the number of minutes you want and use them as you go. There is typically a one dollar a day charge for continuing service, but a thirty dollar a day minimum is a much cheaper bill each month than you'll be getting with a traditional plan.

If you're wanting to get a more traditional cell phone after bankruptcy things will be a bit more expensive up front. Companies will typically still take you as a customer, but will require a large (few hundred dollars) deposit to secure your account. If you fail to make your payments the company will use that money to pay off your account. If you make your payments on time, however, you can typically get the deposit back in about one year.

Another good benefit for going the traditional route is that these companies report to the three major credit bureaus, so if you make all of your payments on time each month this will help you rebuild your credit.

If you keep on top of your finances after discharging your debts then in as little as two years you can have a good score again and no longer have these sorts of problems, and making your payments on time and in full each month is a big part of that. Getting everything discharged was so that you could make a clean start with your finances and making sure you build up this new history of positive credit use is really what it's all about.

You can get a cell phone after a bankruptcy, and you can make it a part of your plan to rebuild your credit over time.
