Yes it that time of year when there is nothing better than a bowl of hot soup. I love soup, stews, and chowders. It is one of those great comfort foods that I remember growing up in New England.

I think I like soup these days because they are easy to make and everything goes into one pot. As the chef of my household that is an important factor when deciding what to cook for dinner. When I have only one pot to control and deal with it sure makes my job easier and clean up is easier as well. My wife really appreciates that.

Soups are great because it is very difficult to mess one up. Having a greasy soup is about the only way to screw up a good soup. Soup is also easy because you can put just about anything in a pot and add some chicken stock or beef stock, a few spices or herbs and it is pretty much done. That is what makes soup different from chowders and stews.

I might even like to eat chowder and stews better than soup because they are a little more complex in flavor. But that also makes them a little more complex in the cooking department as well. Chowders and stews require that you pay a little more attention as to what goes in them. How can you beat a bowl of the classic Beef Stew or a New England Clam Chowder.

During the cold winter months I don’t think there is anything better than a great bowl of hot soup, stew or chowder. Soup, stew and chowder are also great to make in the winter because they are simmered slowly for the most part and this helps keep a house warm and cozy.

I have a number of favorite soup recipes that I like to make this time of year. Cuban Black Bean Soup is always high on my list. Caldo Verde is another one of my favorites which has kale, sausage, potatoes and olive oil as the predominant ingredients. I just made a new recipe from my crock pot cookbook. It was a BBQ Bean Soup that called for beef short ribs. It turned out really good and was a wonderful new addition to my recipe collection.

I hope you get to enjoy a nice hot bowl of soup this winter, perhaps one you have never had before. There are thousands of great soup, stew and chowder recipes available now. If you get creative the choices are limitless.
