         How many times have you been in the good to try a new recipe to learn that you are missing some of the ingredients the recipe calls for? This can be very frustrating especially if you do not want to run to the store to buy a box of baking powder because your box has expired. Did you know there are substitutes for several of these items? Instead of 1 teaspoon of double acting baking powder, you can use 1/4 tsp baking soda plus 1/2 cup buttermilk, or 1/4 tsp baking soda plus 1/2 tsp cream of tartar. Instead of 1 cup of butter, you can use 1 cup of margarine or 7/8 cup of lard plus ½ teaspoon of table salt. Instead of 1 cup of buttermilk, you can use 1 tablespoon of vinegar plus enough sweet milk to fill the cup or 2/3 cup of plain yogurt plus 1/3 cup of sweet milk. Instead of 1 ounce of chocolate, you can use 3 tablespoons of cocoa plus 1 tablespoon of shortening. Instead of 1 tablespoon of cornstarch as a thickening agent, you can use 2 tablespoons of flour. Instead of 1 cup of cream, you can use ½ cup of butter plus ¾ cup of milk. Instead of 1 egg, you can use 2 egg yolks. Instead of 1 cup, all purpose you can use 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of cake flour. Instead of 1 cup of cake flour, you can use 7/8 cup of all-purpose flour. Instead of 1 small clove of garlic, you can use 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder. Instead of 1 cup of honey, you can use 1 ¼ cups sugar plus ¼ cup water. Instead of 1 cup fresh whole milk, you can use 1 cup of dry milk plus 2 teaspoons of butter. Instead of 1 cup of whole milk, you can use ½ cup evaporated milk plus ½ cup water. Instead of 1 cup of sour milk, you can use 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar plus enough sweet milk to fill the cup. Instead of 1 tablespoons of dehydrated minced onion, you can use one small fresh onion. Instead of 1 cup of molasses, you can use 1 cup of honey. Instead of 1 tablespoon of prepared mustard, you can use 1 teaspoon of dry mustard. Instead of 1 cup of Ricotta cheese, you can use 1 cup of cottage cheese plus 1 tablespoon of skim milk. Instead of 1 cup of sour cream, you can use 1 cup of yogurt Instead of 1 cup of brown sugar, you can use ¾ cup of granulated sugar plus ¼ cup of molasses. Instead of 1 1/3 cups of powdered sugar, you can use 1 cup of granulated sugar. Instead of 1 cup of yogurt, you can use 1 cup of buttermilk.
