Have you ever considered giving a wine gift on a special occasion? The gift of wine adds a classy touch to an ordinary gift situation, such as a birthday or holiday. First, be sure your gift recipient likes wine. Then use what you know about the recipient to choose a wine to give. Three of the most popular wine based gifts are the bottle of wine, the wine basket, and the gift certificate.

When giving a single bottle of gift wine, find out if the wine will be drunk immediately or if it will be put into long-term storage. That answer determines what type of wine you will buy. Some wines are drinkable immediately, while others are best after an aging period. You should also select a gift wine that you know the recipient likes. Take a few discreet notes the next time you are around the recipient in a wine drinking situation. This type of gift wine is also appropriate to give to an employer or client.

A wine basket provides a party for the eyes as well as the palate. Centered around several choice bottles of wine, these festive gift baskets are often arranged in bouquet form. The gift wines are surrounded by cheeses, olives, sardines, crackers, imported breads, gourmet candies, and even fruit. Do your gift recipient a favor and get a basket large enough for two! The wine baskets themselves are attractive and useful long after the contents are consumed.

The gift certificate for wine is one of the safest routes for giving a gift of wine. It can be less personal, but gives the recipient much more choice in selecting his gift. The recipient might choose the gallon box of wine at the front of the wine shop. He might also venture into the racks to find a rare vintage to impress someone special. The gift certificate can also be used to bypass the wine and stock up on wine stemware, accessories, and other party supplies.

Bottles of wine, wine gift baskets, and certificates make excellent gifts. Make sure your gift of wine goes to someone who likes wine, or the gift could be awkward for both of you. Each type of gift has its own advantages and disadvantages. If time is short, however, each type of wine gift can be purchased quickly and will delight both you and the recipient.
