An Introduction to Sewing and Types of Stitch.

In the first of many articles I want to share with readers some of the fundamentals of sewing and hopefully impart some tips, tricks and techniques I have learned. To begin with here are some useful definitions for various types of stitch.

Uneven Tacking Stitch:
Typically a half inch stitch on one side of the fabric and a quarter inch on the other side to hold loose pieces of fabric together. Often handy to use bright contrasting colours in order to provide a clear guide for a sewing machine.

Taking Stitch:
This is a more even stitch, approx a quarter inch long in order to provide a more secure hold than the uneven tack.

Running Stitch:
To gather or shirring fabric. Can be achieved by gathering more than one stitch onto the needle point and then pulling them through.

Back Stitch:
This particular stitch reinforces seams. The longer the stitch at the back (typically two and a half times the length of the front) then it may be considered a half back stitch.

Over sewing and Button hole stitch:
This type of stitch is typically used to finish off edges (seams etc.) which may be prone to some fraying.

Hem Stitch:
Typical fabrics to use the hem stitch would be medium to light fabrics. Important when securing the hem, not to pull the thread taught as fabric will gather unnecessarily. By applying thread on the inside of a fold you will have created a blind hemming stitch.

Herringbone Stitch:
The natural criss-cross pattern of this particular stitch creates a very secure hem on your more heavier fabrics and fabrics that are more prone to stretching.
