You Are What You Think


In the children’s book “The Little Engine That Could”, the little blue engine believed he could pull the train of Christmas toys over the mountain saving Christmas for the children on the other side. After trying to get the other engines to save Christmas and realizing it was up to himself, he kept repeating “I think I can, I think I can”. Yet other stronger engines in the book said “I’m too old” or “I’m too tired” when the little blue engine had asked if for their help.

When faced with a task, how many times do we have a reason why we are unable to complete or even attempt the task? If we are unable to overcome the obstacle between our ears, and retain a level of doubt in our mind that the task is impossible, the chance of success is slim. Taking this one step further, we also are a product of what we speak. Our words reinforce our thoughts by verbalizing our belief in our success, or the doubt or disbelief in our mind. How many times have we each said, “I’m not sure I can do that”, or “I haven’t done anything like that before”. With doubts like these, we ultimately fail to gain the success in our personal life, our job, or our business we are striving to achieve.

To improve our ratio of successes, we must change how we think as we approach the task at hand. We must visualize ourselves receiving that award at work, being able to see ourselves in that new car we have always been dreaming about, or being able to resign from your job due to the success of a part-time business. You must place yourself at that point in the future where you can hear the applause from your co-workers as you are presented the award, or to be able to smell the interior of that new car or feel how it drives around the curves. Your subconscious mind will believe the signals you send as it through your five senses. As your mind sees your success, it will help you to deal with obstacles in accomplishing that goal.

Author Napoleon Hill in his book “Think and Grow Rich” talks about “autosuggestion”. This term applies to all suggestions and all self-administered stimuli, which reach one’s subconscious mind through the five senses. Simply put, he is saying if we put positive thoughts and other positive stimuli into our mind, which are mixed with emotion or feeling, our mind at some point, will seek expression through some practical means of attaining the objective.

The Universal Law of Thought provides “you become what you think about the most of the time”. Your thoughts are the blueprints for your reality – if you think positive thoughts or creative ideas towards one of your goals, your mind will proceed to make those thoughts into reality.

It takes multiple positive thoughts to counteract a negative thought. Work to expose your mind to positive personal thoughts and concentrate to avoid the negative or limiting thoughts and comments. You may wish to develop a written statement regarding your goals as suggested by Napoleon Hill and read it out loud morning and night seeing and feeling yourself as having already completed your objective. Motivational or self-help books and CD’s from the local library are an excellent way to add new material to your way of thinking. The circle of friends plays an important role in the type of material from their conversations. If your friends are mostly talking about how bad things have become, are running down others to make themselves feel better, and just seem to have an overall negative outlook on life, it’s probably time to find a new group of friends. This doesn’t mean you can never spend time with these individuals again, it’s that you make a conscious effort to keep the time to a minimum.

Every day you will receive an untold amount of positive and negative information. Focus on the positive, go out of your way to look or listen for the positive around you. Likewise, work to limit and discount the negative in your life – you have too many things to do to get stuck or slowed by spending time or energy in this area. Life will throw all sorts of things at you, but you get to choose how you process the information. No one can tell you how to think. Choose to believe in others and yourself; this will create an environment of propensity leading to your success, not one of failure. Changing how you think really is an “inside” job. It may not be easy to accomplish, but with effort, you will be surprised how much you can change in a short period of time.

“Yesterday’s thoughts have created your present. Today’s thoughts are creating your future”. You really are what you think.
