What Are Refrigerants?

Refrigerants are fluids made up of certain chemicals such as hydrogen, fluorine and carbon. This mix is known as HCF and is the least damaging to the ozone layer. Other types use a chlorine atom as well. The addition of chlorine to the above three chemicals gives us Hydrogenated Chlorofluorocarbon Refrigerants or HCFCs and they are much more damaging to the ozone layer.

CFC or Chlorofluorocarbon contains chlorine, fluorine and carbon, with a high amount of chlorine and so of the three types, it is the most dangerous to the ozone layer. Colour coding identifies the different types of refrigerant.

These refrigerants are fluids. At low temperatures, they absorb heat, but at high temperatures they reject it. This is why a standard saying in the industry is that refrigerants don't make things cold; they take the heat out. That is, they take the heat out of the air and transfer it to another place by a process called conduction.

Refrigerants can be classified further as Azeotopes and Zeotopes. The former is a blend of two types of chemical compounds while the latter is a blend of three compounds. Zeotype characteristic is that the three compounds remain as three distinct compounds, while the Azeotope's two compounds blend together.
