When you think about how you spent your summer days as a kid, your memories probably involve a lot of physical activities. You rode your bike, went swimming, climbed trees, and played yard games, such as baseball, dodgeball, and kickball. If you were lucky enough to have a swing set, it’s a good bet that you spent a ton of time on it. If not, you went to the local playground and used the swings, slides, and monkey bars on their play sets.

No matter what you’re remembering from your childhood, it’s likely that most of the recollections took place outdoors. In fact, back then, it was simply taken for granted that kids would be playing outside all of the time, unless it was raining – and even that wasn’t always a deterrent. These days, it’s sad to say, with the prevalence of high-tech toys, computers, and cell phones, kids are spending too much time indoors, even in the summer.

The puzzling part of this trend is that kids are still motivated, for the most part, by their natural instincts toward physical play and the use of their imaginations. One problem seems to be that, when they’re surrounded by all of their gadgets, and friends who have surrendered to them, they just go along with the crowd, which is another one of children’s inherent tendencies.

Another obstacle is that many of the neighborhood playgrounds that most of us frequented, as children, no longer exist. Among the remaining ones, a large number have fallen into disrepair, leaving the sad picture of rusted slides, broken swings, collapsing monkey bars, and merry-go-rounds that don’t go ‘round anymore. The worst part is that most communities don’t have the interest, or the funds, to refurbish these playgrounds.

Of course, not all of us had playgrounds; but even that didn’t stop us, because it used to be fairly safe to play in the neighborhood streets. In most places, you can forget about doing that now.

The solution is to offer children a secure, fun place to play, which will let them be kids, stretch their imaginations, and get the physical activity and exercise that they need. Believe it or not, the answer can be right in your own backyard, when you go to GazeboCreations.com, where you’ll find 29 styles of safe, durable play sets, constructed from cedar and redwood, which feature one to three clubhouses. You can choose one of their pre-designed play sets, or customize one, by selecting from among dozens of fun options, including rope ladders, gangplanks, swings, slides, rock walls, monkey bars, and bubble walls, and more.
