- Planning.
Take a letter size note pad and pen and go through each area that you want to declutter and what specifically you can see at this point that you want to get rid of. Write down suggestions of what to do with items (sell on ebay, donate, etc.)
Measure shelves, closets, etc. and write down dimensions so that you can purchase supplies to fit if needed – don’t purchase supplies until you get to organizing!!
Take pictures of each area that needs organized
- Purging
Commit to start with an hour of organizing at a scheduled time once a week.
Help maintain it with 15 minutes a day of putting things away.
Designate a box in your home as the location for items to donate so you’ll always have a place to put items you no longer want or need.
While sorting through items, make designated boxes for different items, decide one time whether to donate or put away in another room. Then take the time to put this item in designated boxes for that purpose. If you are interrupted, you can always pick up where you left off. Of course, keep some trash bags handy – your donate box may fill up quickly and you’ll need to dump it into a bag. I suggest white trash bags for the donated items and black for trash so you don’t have to double check later on.
- Organizing
Place items back on the shelves and in containers in a common sense way – if you use envelopes more than you use colored paper, put envelopes front and center in your supply cabinet.
Buy a Brother label maker (about $25.00 at Office Max or Staples) and label all shelves, drawers and containers to keep items in their proper place.
Remember that the majority of the time we are organizing for other people as well as ourselves. Think about them as well when placing things where they should be and labeling shelves
