Adirondack Is Back - The Hot New (Old) Craze In Outdoor Furniture! It's not a huge surprise that an all-American classic such as the Adirondack Chair has made such a huge come back in only the last couple of years. This retro trend is spreading fast as families across the country are electing to spend more time relaxing in a thoughtfully planned outdoor living area. I myself remember as a six year old kid, sliding completely into one of these familiar old chairs, with my legs hanging barely over the edge, while my grandpa and I peeled apples and discussed the hot apple pie topped with melting ice cream that we just knew grandma was going to have for us after dinner. On the wide arm rest of the chair, I balanced a cool lemonade, the breeze was laid back and warm. Stories from Grandpa made time fly. It is truly no big mystery why we love to sit back and relax outdoors, whether it's on your deck, sitting on the front porch watch people go by, in your garden area, or out on the patio. There just isn't a better way to relax than to slide into a comfortable, deep seated, high backed Adirondack chair and just let it all go. You're going to be satisfied and surprised to find a huge variety of Adirondack furniture on the market now. Not only has the original furniture style stood the test of time, but the Adirondack craze has exploded with a wonderful assortment of finishes, material, colors, and styles. Classic Adirondack furniture is built out of wood that is known for resisting deterioration and insects like oak, cypress, cherry, or red or white cedar. The wood selected will vary depending on the part of the country as do specific designs. A popular addition to traditional Adirondack style is deck or patio furnishings constructed using polymer "lumber" that is made out of plastic recycled packaging, milk jugs, and other things. This is not only an environmentally sound way to purchase furniture, but you also have some advantages with easy care, durableness, longevity, and colors won't fade because the pigments are mixed all the way through the plastic resin with UV inhibitors to protect it. Just where exactly did this little part of Americana come from? Actually, it comes from the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. This furniture design was customary at the various mountain retreats and vacation resorts that were so trendy back in the day. By the time 1940 came around the Adirondack style was almost every place. The design began to move south and quickly went west. As the Adirondack design got more and more popular, and made its way around the country, influences regionally started showing up. The design was utilized in a lot of styles of outdoor furniture including; benches, rocking chairs, gliders, porch swings, and because of our French Canadian neighbors, a conversation piece called the "tete a tete" which literally means; "head to head". This fascinating little design combines a couple of chairs and a table between them built as a single piece. What a great way to spend a warm Saturday with somebody you love!
