         How to Pack Lamps

Moving your household successfully is managing to move without undue frustration and stress. How is a stress-free household move accomplished?

The key to any household move is organization! When you make good plans…things just happen to turn out well! Now let’s organize an important component for any household move that you might not have thought of: How to Pack Lamps.

When you stop to think about it, lamps are an important item to set up quickly. This is because your actions in moving are limited to daylight hours…or when the lights are turned on! (Sometimes you even need extra illumination during the day!)

So, how do you set up lamps fast? They key is finding all lamp components easily without a lot of bother.

As you begin to pack items, it’s a good idea to take lamps as you pack rooms and place them in one spot. Don’t bother with trying to pack the lamps until you have them ALL gathered. Then take the following steps to successfully pack your lamps:

    1. Remove any lampshades and put in one place. The lampshades will be ultimately be stacked with packing paper and placed in a single box.

    2. Remove all light bulbs and set aside for now.

    3. Take the cord from each lamp and wrap it around your hand or the base of the lamp and secure with masking tape. This contains the cords keeping them from getting hopelessly tangled in a box of lamps!

    4. Place as many lamps as you can in a single large box. You may need to place them in alternate directions in order to pack as many as you can.

    5. Be certain to label this box in prominent letters on several sides “LAMPS”.

Now it’s time to pack the lampshades and light bulbs. These items need to go together because both are fragile and used together.

    1. Your lampshades should all be in one spot. Choose the largest lampshade, turn the lampshade upside down and place a clean sheet of packing paper inside.

    2. Choose the next size smaller lampshade and place it inside. Keep doing this and fit into a large empty box.

    3. Place as many lampshades as you can in one box, but do not overcrowd or push hard on the nested lampshades. You do not want to crush the shades…they are fragile!

    4. Wrap each individual light bulb in a sheet of packing paper. Several light bulbs can be packed with one sheet by completely rolling one bulb in paper, adding another, etc.

    5. Place wrapped lightbulbs in the bottom on the lampshade box with extra packing paper if needed.

    6. Lightbulbs should NOT be able to roll around inside this box. If bulbs break…BIG and dangerous mess!

    7. Label this box in prominent letters on several sides of the box, “Lampshades”.

If you use any other items with your lamps, such as finials or any other type of lamp topper, wrap and place these in the lamp box as well. If you place these in the lampshade box, they may cause the light bulbs to break!
