Ceramic Italian Basket

Italian basket making is a well-known and respected Italian cottage industry. Known for their high quality and longevity, the

Italian basket maker is a beloved part of the culture. However, there is another type of Italian basket, equally revered for quality and craftsmanship. This is the ceramic basket, part of the centuries-old artisans' tradition which holds a special place in the Italian household.

Italians have been making ceramics for over two thousand years. Over the centuries, Greek, Arab and Spanish influences permeated the Italian ceramic artists' work. One major result of these influential arts was majolica, named after the Spanish

island of Majorca.

These pieces are three-dimensional and often depict the fruits of the earth. Examples include spoon rests shaped in the form

of an artichoke, eggplant or an ear of corn. Hand-painted and color-correct representations of food are a common theme.

The ceramic Italian basket grew out of the Majolica movement, and is still going strong. In Italy, tableware and ceramic

shops carry many fine examples of the ceramic Italian basket.

Italian ceramic baskets are formed just like their wicker counterparts. They typically include a handle, molded in a braided

or lattice design and embellished with ceramic flowers, which are hand-painted in the signature detail for which Italian

ceramic artisans are known.

These ceramic baskets fulfill many of the criterion for simplicity with artfulness combined with a functional purpose and

design.

The majority of the ceramic Italian basket is usually painted white. Color is introduced through delicate designs and the

embellishment of intricately formed flowers, birds or fruits.

These ceramic Italian baskets make a welcome addition to your tableware display. Such a basket can be elegantly displayed on your dining room table or buffet, filled with fresh fruits.

Now, how do you find an authentic ceramic Italian basket? Ebay is loaded with authentic pieces at good prices. Italian ceramic websites are also good bets.

If you're buying a used piece, check it out carefully. Ideally, there should be no crazing in the porcelain. An authentic piece should include a hallmark, citing the artisan of origin. On older pieces, you'll often find the word “Italy” inscribed on the bottom of the piece. In addition, look for pieces that declare no chips or broken pieces of the decorative colored parts, such as flower petals, fruits or bird motifs. If the piece has the proper credentials, no crazing or chipped adornments, you probably have a winner.

Be prepared to spend some time looking for the perfect piece. The ceramic Italian baskets are delicate and prone to chips due

to moving from place to place over time. These ceramic baskets are quite beautiful, perfect for a wedding gift or family

heirloom.
