Measuring for Plantation Shutters

Please note: Everyone has permission to use this article. Please be kind and reference www.shadesshuttersblinds.com and Lawren Gournay

Measuring for plantation shutters is much easier than most people think. There are two ways to install a regular plantation shutter. First is inside the window opening and second is over the window opening.

To measure for a plantation shutter to fit inside the window opening, you will need around 2 ½” of unobstructed depth. Measure with a metal measuring tape the width in three spots. Measure top, middle and bottom. Use the measurement that is the narrowest to the nearest 1/8” of an inch. If unsure about the 1/8th, round down to the nearest ¼”. Next, do the same with the height. Look at the window that the plantation shutters will go into and ask these questions: Does it have a windowsill protruding into the room? Do you need a divider? Do you want a Z-Frame or L-Frame?

To measure a plantation shutter for out side the window, do the same thing. The only difference is that you add three inches to the height and three inches to the width to make the inside frame of the plantation shutter to be flush with the opening.
