Natural Lawn Care Is A Reward In Itself

Maybe one of the biggest pleasures of having a lush, green yard surrounding your home is that sense of being at one with nature. Even if you are not an environmentalist, it is in our nature to enjoy being in the middle of grass, trees, shrubs and flowers. Having lovely growing things in our near vacinity makes us feel in harmony with nature. This is a good motivation to want to take good care of the plants upon your own property, including the grass. Grass in your yard may seem like a very domesticated Grass that grows on your property may look like an extremely domesticated covering of green. Nonetheless, it is still an organic, living botanical thing, and the more you learn about how to make it stronger and healthier they better your grass will be able to thrive and the more attractive it will be.

One of the first considerations you should make for a healthy, natural lawn is in the type of grass seed you choose. You need to look at grass varieties that do well in your local area and have the color and thickness you desire. You should be able to find a large number of grass seed from which to choose. Especially when starting a new lawn you should get some counsel from your local professionals on the best seeds for your climate and soils type. You should educate yourself ahead of time on how your grass plants will react to changes in the seasons, so you know what to expect.

As an example, you will find that some grasses do well in cooler temperatures but loose their lushness at the height of the summer. Another example is the popular Bermuda grass which grows slowly in spring and fall, but grows even better the heat of summer is coming on. Another tricky situation to deal with is a yard that has both sunny areas and shade. Some people deal with is problem by using a Bermuda style seed for the sunny areas and a shade-loving grass for the covered areas. This will mean the yard will have good coverage with grass, but some lawn owners will be less happy with an obvious line of difference between the two types of grass.

It is also important to remember to use fertilizers and weedkillers as intelligently and sparingly as possible. An example of intelligent chemical use is to apply a pre-emergent fertilizing product at the exact right time because it works in step with the natural cycles of both the grass and the weeds. By giving the young grass extra nutrients at the right time, it will have the advantage over the weeds and crowd them out. Another example of a pre-emergent is a pre-emergent weed product that does not poison weeds, but instead it reduces the germination of weed seeds, so that there is less competition for your grass.

Another example of wise use of nutrients is to purchase a lawn mower that can mulch your own grass clippings. This kind of mower will chop your clippings very fine before discharging them. Then you leave the clippings on your yard to decompose instead of removing them by a bag or raking. This step returns nitrogen and other nutrients to your soil.

It is quite achievable to grown a healthy lawn with a minimum of chemical assistance. You can feel good about doing things as organically and naturally as possible while having a beautiful yard at the same time. Minimal use of chemicals also reduces contamination of the water table. You can feel good about your efforts and your green lawn.
