Pavilion Provides “L” of a Good Time

Since a pavilion is one of the most common and recognizable structures in the country, it’s quite interesting that the word, pavilion, is one of the most frequently misspelled, as many people tend to put in two “l’s.” If that is your wont, it’s understandable, as double consonants following a vowel normally make the vowel short, while a single consonant usually makes it long. Since that’s the case with million, but not vermilion, that makes most of us long – for simpler spelling rules, or, at least, rules that don’t have a milion (oops!) exceptions!Of course, English is one of the most confusing languages, and never really has had any firm rules; but, they are much stricter than they were in days of yore (your? you’re?). As English evolved, it was changed many times by foreign influences, as well as by people who were trying to capture precise dialects. In fact, the Middle English spelling of pavilion, which comes from the Latin, papilion, was pavilloun, or pavillioun. So, if your instinct is to double the “l’s,” you come by it honestly.A pavilion, by definition (or, in this case, many definitions), can be a large tent, or something resembling a tent or canopy, a structure that projects from a building, or one of many detached or partly detached units into which a building may be divided. It can also be a temporary structure used for housing exhibits, or a usually open, sometimes ornamental, structure, used for entertainment or shelter.Indeed, there are many variations in pavilions and their uses. For the most part, we think of them as being spacious, light, and airy outdoor rooms, with peaked roofs. We usually associate them with special occasions, such as garden parties, reunions, awards ceremonies, weddings, receptions, concerts, and sporting events. Overwhelmingly, we also identify them with fun times and leisure activities.Pavilions can be found in parks, as well as rest and recreation areas, on picnic, hospital, and camping grounds, college campuses, and even in backyards. Many times, a pavilion is located near a facility or swimming pool, and used as a place for changing clothes or serving refreshments. At GazeboCreations.com, you can find a magnificent pavilion for any use you have in mind.
