<h1>Family as an Integral Part of each Human Being.</h1> <p align=right>by Andrew Schwartz</p> <div align=justify>The alliteration and accretion of ideas in "hating, hurting, hissing" demonstrates the degree of their hostility, which not even Fish can get rid of. The epitome of the house shows that it represents the total of Australia, and by doing this Winton suggests that agreement and happiness can only come after settlement amid ALL of its peoples takes place. This thought is reinforced by Quick, when he realizes that "It's us, and us, and us." Clearly Winton's idea of the future encompasses cultural agreement among all Australians. Winton cements the procedure through Fish's arrival to the river. Happiness and harmony at “Cloud Street” is Fish's present to the Lambs and the Pickles. The two families dance jointly, and this show of agreement is further reinforced in the ending, when the barrier is taken down, and Oriel moves back into “Cloud Street”. Metaphorically, all barriers have been isolated, and all aspects of “Cloud Street” have been integrated into a fully functional entire. All that was disjointed in the beginning is pieced back as one. Winton brings us back full circle to the beginning, at last revealing that the whole story is Fish's last flashback. This round structure is indicative of Winton's vision that family life involves the fluctuation among fragmentation and integration, and suggests that once the cycle completes itself, agreement and happiness will go after. Winton weaves the relevant issues of individuality, gender and reconciliation in “Cloud Street” through the thought of family. Family is shown to be an integral part of our lives. In a society which is very much fragmented, “Cloud Street” captures a sense of homesickness for a time.
