In the section "Fish Lamb Comes Back", we are introduced to the God-fearing Lamb family. They are represented as a characteristic warm, loving Australian family. Though disaster strikes as soon as Fish gets caught into the fishing net and drowns. 
At this point the story voice switches from third person narration "Fish will keep in mind. All his life and all his next life he'll bear in mind this dim, cool plunge where sound and light and shape are gone..." to the first person "Oh, I memorize. Mesh against the face, the cage of down and up and the faint idea of light..." which signifies the start of Fish's disintegration of his physical self with his spiritual self "his soul torn away". Fish doesn't desire to be brought back "Never, never, was there a sadder, more disappointed sound." in spite of the Lambs' triumphant celebration of the 'wonder', Winton foreshadows that "...it wasn't quite precise. For the reason that not all the Fish Lamb had come back."</div>
